Izmir’s Groundwater Under Digital Monitoring: The UGS4ClimateDW Project Launches Its Opening Meeting

As the Department of International Water Resources at the İzmir Institute of Technology (İYTE), we held the kick-off meeting for the “Urban Groundwater Sustainability for Climate Change in the Digital World (UGS4ClimateDW)” project, a critical step against climate change.
📍 Scope and Objectives of the Project
Supported by the European Union and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change of the Republic of Turkey, this project aims to safeguard Izmir’s water future. Within the scope of the project:
Extensive Monitoring Network: Coastal aquifers stretching from Bergama to Selçuk will be continuously monitored via online monitoring systems.
Real-Time Data: Key parameters, including groundwater level, salinity, pH, and temperature, will be regularly monitored to build a scientific database.
Early Warning System: An early warning infrastructure will be established to address the risk of saltwater intrusion, the greatest threat to coastal regions.
🤝 Strong Collaboration
Led by IYTE and IZSU, and implemented in collaboration with other partner institutions, this initiative will establish a scientific foundation for Izmir’s climate-resilient water management strategies.
