Chair’s Welcome

Welcome to the home of the International Water Resources Department at Izmir Institute of Technology!

The International Water Resources Department (IWR) is a graduate education program within the Graduate School of Engineering and Sciences. The international water resources department admitted its first students for the 2020-2021 academic year. The language of education is English, as in all departments of IZTECH. The International Water Resources Graduate Program is an interdisciplinary program open to students from related departments of science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, law and business.

Climate change, increasing population, unplanned urbanization and inept planning have negatively impacted the quality and quantity of water resources.
In many areas, water pollution causes severe health problems. More than 2 billion people in the world have water supply issues. Population growth and climate change exacerbate these problems. One of the main objectives of the International Water Resources Master Program is to address these matters by training skilled specialists and scientists that can develop, use and manage surface and groundwater resources required by ecosystems.

Our program aims to help students acquire the technical and managerial knowledge and skills necessary to successfully plan, design, operate and manage water resources projects. Our university provides the necessary infrastructure and equipment to support a comprehensive education in Integrated Water Resources Management. Our students will also master hydraulic, hydrogeological and modeling processes and develop their own infrastructure in this training process. They will learn about basic scientific and engineering relations as they study water management, urban water management, water law, water policies, transboundary water, water science, water engineering, hydrogeology and water quality. Our graduates will be able to design technical solutions to water resources problems, conduct analytical and model-based experimental research, and develop remedial technologies to reduce the impact of natural water related hazards.

The program faculty members are professors with advanced knowledge in the water sector with relevant international background and experience. Professional consultants will guide you through the program, help you reflect on your knowledge and skills during your training process, advise you on academic career opportunities, and help you choose a suitable thematic study plan.

The International Water Resources Graduate Program welcomes students from related departments such as engineering, basic sciences, planning, law, agriculture and business. Research funds have increased significantly over the past few years, expanding the availability of state and university funded scholarships for students. The total budget of our academic staff is half a million dollars. The main purpose of our research programs is to produce effective solutions to important problems.

We invite you to join us as we work to achieve sustainable development goals.  If helping solve global water problems excites you as it does us, join our dynamic and international community at the Izmir Institute of Technology. Together, let’s work for a safer and more sustainable life in and beyond in Turkey. I hope this letter has helped inform you about our program. You can check our website for more detailed information. For your questions and concerns, do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Prof.Dr. Alper BABA
